It is the time of year that kids are discussing their Halloween costumes on the way to school, excited to be their favorite super hero or that Mom is going to make them a special costume. But some kids don’t know if they will have a costume and are afraid they will miss out on the fun.
In our Home-Based program Barb has been working with a single mom of three boys. Mom is doing her best to provide for all three boys, and knew they were excited to attend a local Halloween party this week. Barb went to visit, and Mom had plans of trying to make the boys robot costumes out of paper bags so they could attend the event. However, time was running out and she didn’t know if she could quite get it done.
Following the visit with the family Barb ran home to grab past year’s costumes from her boys to give to the family. She had 5 or 6 costumes her kids didn’t have use for and she dropped them off to Mom. Later that night Barb received a call from three delighted little boys, so happy they had Halloween costumes like their friends – they were nearly in tears that someone did something so nice.
We have exceptional caseworkers, and we are sure this isn’t the first time this has happened. CHOICES wants to ensure that all kids receiving services from us are able to experience special childhood moments.…like trick or treating with siblings and friends. As you are out and about after Halloween browsing sales and clearance, or putting more costumes into a bin, please remember we accept donations of gently used costumes. You can drop off at our office anytime and we will save for our children next year – or provide to those in need during the upcoming week.
