Help CHOICES families recover from Tornado Damage

Following the brutal storm that hit the Miami Valley our team got right to work checking on our families and youth. In our outreach we have discovered a handful of families that are affected by the tornado outbreak. (Community based families and foster families) As you can imagine getting in touch with them, remaining in touch and assessing their needs in the middle of a disaster has proven to be difficult. To be honest many of us haven’t ever experienced something like this.

We know that many need help, and so we have really put our heads together to try to meet their needs. For families that have not been reachable by phone we are going to their home and neighborhood to try to locate them.

What we know now is that we have 3 families without power, one that has significant damage to their home and a couple that we haven’t quite located. As you have seen the Dayton community is coming together to help in a big way! In the current state many people are able to obtain meals in their neighborhood close by through donations. Transportation remains a large barrier.

The biggest way you can impact our families in need is to donate monetarily here. As we assess their needs we will provide items or gift cards to them. Right now we have gift card requests for meals (areas close that have power Mcdonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, White Castle). We have requests for bus passes, laundromat funds and personal care items. We know when power is restored they will need help in purchasing items to clean their fridge/freezer and restock. No donation is too small!

We have two partners helping with in kind items that have been identified. As more come in we will update you. We want to be cautious of giving them too much stuff to manage too quickly. For some items will need to be replaced, but stable housing also needs to happen first.  We are also providing them with updated lists of other resources we know we cannot provide.
