By definition, resilience is the capacity to withstand or recover quickly. A resilient person is someone who successfully adapts to stressors and can bounce back and are often characterized by their awareness, self-control, problem solving skills and social support. They’re aware of situations, both internal and external and display optimism when needed. These parents display all these traits and more. When this couple became licensed, they shared their desire to provide a safe, stable and loving space for youth while understanding the goal of reunification. They also shared their values to honor commitments and follow through and they have proved time and time again that they are not only willing, but eager to do just that.
They started their fostering journey in the spring of 2023 and took a placement of two sweet kiddos very soon after. When these youth were placed into care, the extent of their needs was truly unknown. The Rookie Family have attended hundreds of appointments and been intentional to advocate on their kiddos behalf with every provider. With each medical appointment and therapy service, the Rookie Family have been quick to learn new skills, ask questions, do research and follow through on whatever is asked of them to make sure their youth are championed for success. With youth who benefit from 24/7 supervision, they have provided this support with such grace. The Rookie Family have taken every challenge in stride and are quick to reassure their team that they are ready for whatever comes their way. They demonstrate follow through daily by using therapy techniques and practicing movements to ensure their youth are progressing with their developmental milestones.
The Rookie Family have consistently demonstrated humility and most would never know the sacrifices they’ve made to do what they do. Due to the needs of their kiddos, they aren’t always able to attend events or go out in public but they have taken on every challenge with a smile on their face and a positive attitude. This family continues to be champions of all of their kiddos and show up every single day in all the best ways. Our Rookie Parents are tireless advocates and even when it’s not always easy or convenient they ensure that the team is always looking out for the youth’s best interests.
While the Rookie Family have provided truly unmatched care for their youth, they have also shown a fierce love and extension of care to the youth’s birth family as well. They have allowed and encouraged the birth family to attend appointments, they have provided pictures and encouraged contact and they even provided a sentimental Christmas gift from the kids for their first big holidays apart from their family.
To our Rookie Parents of the Year, thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for your youth. Your hard work, dedication, resiliency and intentional care have not gone unnoticed. Your commitment to meeting needs has been instrumental in the success of your youth. Congratulations on being this year’s rookie foster parents of the year!
