Success Story | 15 Year Old Foster Youth Adopted

Sarah Adoptive Hearing

We have a really big reason to celebrate here at CHOICES! Sarah who is 15 has been with us in foster care for 2 years and was adopted last week by her foster parents, Anna and Vernon Sloan. Any adoption from foster care is a BIG deal, but there are many teens out there looking for forever families and we are happy Sarah has found her match. Dave Thomas Foundation estimates there are over 100,000 kids in foster care waiting to be adopted – over 2,500 in Ohio.

Much like many of our other adoptive foster parents Anna and Vernon didn’t plan on adopting when they started to foster. They couldn’t imagine not knowing what Sarah was doing or where she was…and it was at that moment they knew they wanted her to be a part of their family.  Anna and Vernon’s biological daughter, Joan, is also foster parent with us.  Joan was also very excited and told us, “I’ve always wanted a little sister.”  Joan put together surprise adoption party for Sarah this past Saturday to officially welcome her to the family.

Sarah is excited to be a part of the Sloan family and looks forward to Grandpa Vernon teaching her how to drive. Vernon said she can start practicing with the lawn mower! Sarah will be a freshman next year and has been active in choir, she loves to sing. Sarah wants to learn guitar and the  support you provided at Christmas provided Sarah with a guitar and she has been teaching herself. Sarah would love to take guitar lessons.

We asked Sarah what she looks forward to the most and she told us, “Staying the night at my friend’s house.”  One of the many things foster youth miss out on.

While CHOICES does not provide adoption services, our staff is able to work with our foster parents and an adoption agency allowing for a smooth transition. Many of our foster parents do end up adopting and our staff plays a big supporting role. Sarah’s caseworker made her a knot bracelet to present to her on adoption day. We love the family charm and the lady bug is a symbol for good luck.

“An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break.”
~ An ancient Chinese belief

We wish Sarah and Grandma and Grandpa Sloan and Big Sis Joan the best, as she enjoys many

family activities and finishes high school.
