This week we need your support to help provide a safety helmet for one of our young girls in our foster care program. Jashlyne is a sweet and affectionate 10 year old. She has been diagnosed by a geneticist with 1p36 Deletion Syndrome. The syndrome can include: severe intellectual disability, seizures, structural abnormalities of the brain and weak muscle tone. Most individuals, including Jashlyne, do not speak or only speak a few words.
Because of her syndrome Jashlyne has very limited communication skills that interfere with peer interaction. As you can imagine not being able to verbalize your needs, feeling and emotion leads to frustration. Jashlyne gets frustrated easily and has outbursts that cause self injury, its is why she needs this special helmet. Her school is requiring her get a helmet for her safety, she was previously provided one that the county paid for. It was not sturdy enough for her outbursts and cracked.
This week we want to provide Jashlyne the helmet she needs to be safe at school, and we are asking you to help. Jashlyne has been learning sign language to help communicate, and it is helping some with her outbursts. She loves music and to dress up, her favorite thing to wear is different hats. Jashlyne loves to give hugs and smiles a lot – she is a very happy young girl. Jashlyne also does play appropriately with her peer group despite her syndrome. We just need to make sure she is safe in all environments with a new helmet.
